GRACE COLTON

BACKGROUND

Delphine Yvoire was something of an enigma. French nobility living in England who never married, was never seen eating or drinking, slept from dawn ‘till dusk, and didn’t care who knew of her proclivity for pretty young servants.

Margaret Brandon was one of the aforementioned servants, coming to work for Delphine in 1609 at the age of 26 after the death of her father left her a jobless orphan (her mother having died giving birth to Margaret’s younger brother, Anthony, who died himself at the age of ten). She became enamoured with her employer immediately and, less than a year into Margaret’s time with Delphine, they became lovers – though she didn’t learn of her mistress’ true nature until months later.

Returning home gravely wounded in the middle of the night, Delphine refused to see a doctor, ordering everyone but Margaret away. When asked what she could possibly do to help, Delphine requested the girl’s blood, revealing what she truly was – a vampire, one of over five hundred years in age, and one who needed blood to survive the rest of the night after a run-in with vampire hunters.

In 1611 those same vampire hunters caught up with Delphine once again, invading her home and cutting down anyone who tried to stand in their way, Margaret included. She watched, bleeding out on the floor, as Delphine dealt with their attackers, and then she was offered a choice.

Margaret became a vampire that night and went on to spend years with her mistress, learning all there was to know about being a vampire and more, Delphine tutoring her to better her mind. They drifted apart eventually, immortality making the both of them long for more in their lives, though they continued to meet for weeks or even months at a time before separating once more.

Margaret travelled over the years; she started in France, then Italy, before eventually moving further afield. A particular love of hers had always been art in its many forms and she would take in as much as she could, educating herself as she wandered the globe.

Eventually came a woman’s right to attend university and Margaret did just that, returning to her home of London to study. She would return again years later, eventually acquiring a degree in art history.

In 2019 she moved to the United States for the first time under the name Grace Colton, where she still remains as curator for the Colton Art Gallery in New Orleans.

PERSONALITY

Somewhat cold and serious to begin with, but warms up to people quite easily. She can be incredibly snarky and quick-witted and loves nothing more than the back-and-forth she gets with her employees. Unlike a lot of vampires in the movies, Grace loves her life. That’s not to say that she doesn’t have rougher times – living so long also comes with a lot of loss – but she has gotten to experience so much in her time and hopes to continue to do so and, as such, is very careful about who she reveals her true self to.

APPEARANCE

5’8” and slim with incredibly pale skin. Physically still appears to be in her mid to late twenties. Naturally wavy dark brown hair that is usually straightened, and blue eyes so pale they can appear grey at times.

Usually seen, when working, in dark skinny jeans, button down shirts, heeled boots and, sometimes, tight-fitting, knee-length dresses. A little more relaxed in her day-to-day life, swapping out the button downs for loose-fitting vests and t-shirts.

ABILITIES

As a vampire Grace must drink blood to survive and avoid sunlight as much as possible - a few minutes is fine, if weakening, but after too long direct sunlight starts to rapidly burn her skin.

She is stronger and faster than humans, possesses superhuman senses and doesn't age but, contrary to popular culture, she cannot fly or turn into a bat. Garlic will make her ill if consumed, but so will any food. Holy water is just water to her, and crucifixes are just decoration. The only ways to kill her are with a well-places strike to the heart - not necessarily by a wooden stake - and decapitation.

She is also capable of a small amount of hypnosis - nothing too extreme, but enough to make a human forget if she has, for example, fed on them.

Away from her vampiric abilities Maggie is a keen artist, favouring painting and photography.
